To delete a picture, open the conversation in WhatsApp with it and tap and hold it. Select "Delete". Then, press the trash can icon in the lower-left corner. This will erase it from your "Media, Links, and Docs" section in WhatsApp.

There might be a copy in your Photos. Press the home button and tap on "Photos". Locate the picture in your albums and tap on it. Tap the trash can icon in the lower-right corner. Tap on "Delete Photo".

Please notice that these actions do not guarantee that your friends will do the same with the copy of the picture that they have received (you cannot delete it remotely from their smartphones).
